Transfer Admission
The University of California considers you a transfer applicant if you have enrolled in a regular session (i.e., a session other than summer) at a college or university after high school. You can't disregard your college record and apply as a freshman.
The vast majority of transfer students come to UC at the junior level from California community colleges. The University gives qualified California community college students priority in admissions over applicants from four-year and out-of-state institutions.
Transferring as a Junior
To be eligible for admission to UC as a junior transfer student, California residents must fulfill both of the following criteria:
Complete 60 semester (90 quarter) units of transferable college credit with a GPA of at least 2.4. No more than 14 semester (21 quarter) units may be taken Pass/Not Pass.
Complete the following seven transferable college courses, earning a grade of C or better in each course:
Two courses in English composition
One course in mathematical concepts and quantitative reasoning
Four courses chosen from at least two of the following subject areas: arts and humanities, social and behavioral sciences, and physical and biological sciences
Each course must be worth at least 3 semester (4-5 quarter) units. Completing the Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) prior to transferring to UC may satisfy the required seven-course pattern for UC eligibility, depending on the courses you take. For more, visit
the ASSIST website.
Lower Division Transfer Eligibility
If you were eligible for admission to the University when you graduated from high school meaning you satisfied the Subject, Examination, and Scholarship Requirements, or were identified by the University of California during your senior year as eligible in the local context you are eligible for transfer if you have a C (2.0) average in your transferable college coursework.
If you met the Scholarship Requirement in high school but did not satisfy the 15-course Subject Requirement, you must clear the course deficiency by taking transferable college courses in the missing subjects and earning a C or better to be eligible to transfer. You must also maintain an overall C (2.0) GPA in transferable coursework.
In addition to these eligibility requirements, the University of California has specified additional requirements and rules about transfer GPA for transfer applicants.
No standardized tests are required of transfer applicants.
Nonresidents
The minimum admission requirements for nonresidents are very similar to those for residents. Please consult with the Admissions Office at one of the University of California campuses for details. In all cases, however, nonresidents must have a grade point average of 2.8 or higher in all transferable college coursework.
